Not sure which beer style suits your taste?

GlobalBeerIndex helps you discover styles based on the flavours and characteristics you actually enjoy.

Answer a few simple questions about your preferences — from crisp and refreshing to hoppy, malty, dark, fruity or sour — and discover which beer styles match your taste.

Discover Your Best Beer Style Matches

Beer styles can be surprisingly difficult to navigate. Names such as Saison, Kölsch, Gueuze or ESB don’t necessarily tell you whether you’ll actually enjoy the beer.
The Beer Style Match starts with what you like. Your answers are compared with the sensory characteristics of different beer styles, including flavour, aroma, bitterness, sweetness, body and fermentation character.
As you answer, your matches are refined to help you discover styles that fit your preferences — including styles you may not have considered before.

How Does the Beer Style Match Work?

The Beer Style Match looks beyond familiar style names. Instead, it starts with the characteristics you enjoy in a beer.
Your answers help identify preferences for characteristics such as malt, hops, fruitiness, roast, sourness, bitterness and fermentation character. As you answer more questions, the tool narrows down the styles that best fit your preferences.
The result isn’t about finding one objectively “best” beer style. It’s about finding styles whose characteristics most closely match what you enjoy.

Why Match Beer by Taste?

Beer style names can tell you a lot about brewing tradition, ingredients and origin — but they don’t always tell you what the beer will taste like.
Two styles with very different names can share characteristics you enjoy, while beers within a familiar category can taste surprisingly different.
By starting with your preferences rather than a style name, the Beer Style Match can help you explore the wider world of beer and discover new styles from a different perspective.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Beer Style Match?

The Beer Style Match is a guided way to discover beer styles based on the characteristics you enjoy. Instead of asking you to choose from style names you may or may not know, it starts with your taste preferences and uses your answers to identify matching beer styles.

How are my beer style matches determined?

GlobalBeerIndex describes beer styles using sensory characteristics and flavour-related attributes. Your answers indicate which characteristics appeal to you, and the Beer Style Match compares those preferences with the profiles of different beer styles. As you answer more questions, the matches are refined.

Why do my match results change after each question?

Each answer adds more information about your preferences. A style that looks like a strong match after the first question may become less suitable once you indicate, for example, how you feel about bitterness, malt character, fruitiness, sourness or other characteristics. The ranking therefore develops as the tool learns more about what you enjoy.

Do I need to know anything about beer styles?

No. The questions are designed around taste and beer characteristics rather than technical style knowledge. You do not need to know the difference between styles such as Kölsch, Saison, Gueuze or ESB before you start.

What should I do after finding a beer style I like?

Use your matches as a starting point for exploring. You can open the corresponding style pages on GlobalBeerIndex to learn more about their flavour, aroma, sensory characteristics and background, or use the Beer Style Explorer to compare styles in more detail.
