Four ways to place any beer — by observing structure, not guessing

Beer styles can seem confusing.
Colour, bitterness, alcohol strength, brand names — they often blur together.

The goal is not to assign one “correct” label.
The goal is to place a beer structurally:

  • What kind of beer is this?
  • How does it relate to others?
  • Which sensory drivers define it?

Core Principles of the GBI Framework

Axis 1 — Visual Structure

(Colour × Clarity)

Appearance gives orientation, not classification.

Observe two variables independently:

Colour
Pale → golden → amber → brown → black
Primarily influenced by malt kilning and roasting.

Clarity
Brilliant → clear → slightly hazy → hazy → opaque
Often influenced by proteins, yeast, dry hopping, or mixed fermentation.

Important:

  • Colour does not predict strength.
  • Dark does not mean sweet.
  • Hazy does not mean heavy.
  • Pale does not mean light.

This axis provides context — not conclusions.

Axis 2 — Dominant Aroma Drivers

(What generates the smell?)

Now smell the beer.
Ask: what is structurally driving the aroma?

Most beers are primarily influenced by one of four sources:

Hop-driven
Citrus, tropical fruit, pine, resin, herbal notes

Malt-driven
Bread, biscuit, caramel, chocolate, roast

Fermentation-driven
Fruity esters, spicy phenols, farmhouse or funky character

Smoke-driven
Campfire, bacon, wood smoke

A beer may show multiple aroma components — but one driver is usually dominant.

Axis 3 — Taste Balance

(Sweetness × Bitterness × Sourness)

Taste dimensions are independent.

A beer can be:

  • Bitter and sweet
  • Sour and fruity
  • Sweet and roasty
  • Dry and intensely bitter

Assess three axes separately:

Sweetness
Dry → lightly sweet → clearly sweet
(Perceived sweetness, not body or alcohol.)

Bitterness
Low → moderate → firm → intense
(Bitterness is distinct from hop aroma.)

Sourness
Absent → refreshing acidity → sharp
(Acidity is a core taste dimension — not automatically a flaw.)

The structural combination of these three determines balance.

Axis 4 — Mouthfeel, Alcohol & Finish

Finally, observe how the beer feels rather than tastes.

This includes:

Body
Light → medium → full → creamy

Dryness vs roundness
Crisp and dry → soft and rounded

Alcohol warmth
Neutral → warming → pronounced

Finish length
Short → lingering → long and persistent

Beers that appear similar often diverge most clearly on this axis.

Putting the Axes Together

These four axes do not “solve” a beer.
They locate it within a sensory structure.

Many styles overlap — intentionally.

If a beer sits between multiple directions, that is not confusion.
It is structural nuance.
