Over the past months, GlobalBeerIndex has continued to evolve — not by adding noise, but by strengthening structure.
The most visible step forward is that the GBI Explorer is now publicly live and fully operational.
What started as a modelling exercise has become a working reference environment for structured sensory comparison across 120+ beer styles.
What has changed since the last update?
While the core principles remain the same — a fixed 15-dimension sensory model and formally defined core styles and variants — the emphasis has shifted from building the framework to making it usable.
Recent progress includes:
expanding and refining style coverage
clarifying relational comparison between styles
improving consistency across sensory ranges
introducing a clear separation between descriptive structure and causal modelling
launching a free and PRO access structure
The Explorer is no longer a prototype — it is now a stable reference tool.
A deliberate architectural choice
One important design decision has been to keep the Explorer descriptive rather than causal.
It focuses on:
how styles differ
where they overlap
what structural expectations a style implies
The underlying modelling includes deeper causal relationships, but these are intentionally separated from the public reference layer. Establishing a stable sensory framework comes first.
Why this matters
Beer styles are often described individually, through text and tradition.
GBI approaches them relationally.
Every style sits within the same multidimensional framework. This allows direct comparison without relying on rankings, popularity, or subjective scoring.
The aim is not to simplify beer — but to make comparison coherent.
What I’m observing
Interestingly, the more consistent the framework becomes, the more nuance becomes visible.
Overlap between styles does not disappear — it becomes clearer.
Differences do not become exaggerated — they become contextual.
That balance between structure and expressiveness continues to be the central challenge of this project.
What comes next
The focus remains on:
further validation and calibration of sensory ranges
expanding variant modelling
improving analytical clarity within the Explorer
strengthening the professional use case
For now, the priority remains discipline over expansion.
A solid reference framework is more valuable than rapid feature growth.
